Technical Problems with Dantz Retrospect not working and giving the "Can't access volume xxxxxx, error -530 (backup client not found)" message.

This page is for the more technical issues and assumes you have read how to setup Dantz Retrospect for both the server machine and the client machine. If you have not done these correctly (setting up TCP and UDP ports through the Windows firewall for both machines and allowing the Dantz Retrospect server firewall to give Dantz Retrospect access out onto the local network to speak to the local client), then click here.

The error message "Can't access volume xxxxxx, error -530 (backup client not found)" can occur for a number of reasons. They are listed in order of commonality with likely possible solutions.

Cause1. Other firewalls on the Retrospect server machine.

If you are running another firewall, Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm etc (Norton is very common in the UK and it often installs an Internet Firewall without people realizing it), then they need to be switched off.

Open up Norton and on the left of the window, check if it says Firewall anywhere. If it does, switch it off. (You may to to ensure you have closed all your internet browser windows and are not doing anything with the internet first. Also, stop all the Ad Blocking and Privacy features as well. You can always switch them on a few minutes later, you just need to stop anything that might be interfering with Retrospect and stopping it from working). If Retrospect starts working with all these things disabled you have then ascertained the cause of the problem, and can switch them all back on again, one at a time and then works out a means to get around the problem.

Cause 2. Other firewalls on the Retrospect client machine.

Similarly check for any firewalls on the client machine that could stop retrospect and disable them.

Cause 3. Network problems.

Confirm you can ping the client machine from the server (click here to see technical pages elsewhere on this site which take you through pinging another machine). If you can ping the other machines, then Retrospect should be fine, subject to Cause 4, which is continued on the next page.
